Freedom's Run
On Saturday, October 3, I participated in and finished my first full marathon. Taking place in Jefferson County, West Virginia, the 26.2 mile course took runners through Harpers Ferry into Shepherdstown.
I was doing great for the first 15 miles or so, along Canal Road by the river. Then we turned and ascended into the Civil War battlefields of Antietam, the hills of which by mile 20 had caused me to "hit the wall" as they say. The last 6.2 miles was very difficult for me to accomplish, but I got it done and that's what counts.
Many thanks to race director Mark Cucuzzella, who pulled together an amazing inaugural race, having 1,800 runners from 36 states! It was a fine event and I look forward to it again.
