Soldiers and Crickets
Inspired by local events, in early 2007 I recorded a CD of acoustic guitar music. It is now available for free download.
1. Ghosts Of Spruce - In the abandoned logging town of Spruce, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, you can hear what the breeze is saying if you just listen long enough.
2. Cranberry Lulls - A day spent in the Cranberry Glades, ensconced in its waters, flora, and creatures, calms the mind and comforts the soul in ways no other place can.
3. Green Bank Reverie - The days hiking through the pine groves of Green Bank, the times with family walking and riding bikes all over the observatory roads, these are some of the things that make up my dreams in Green Bank.
4. The Icicles Hate - The frozen winters along the streams of Pocahontas County are of unmatched beauty, and have no tolerance for the schemes of progress and profit.
5. You Are Peace - The highlands of Pocahontas County offer a quiet mind for those who listen, to the river, in the wind, across the field. Even in the mirror from time to time.
6. See Them - In memory of the twelve miners who died in the Sago, West Virginia mine disaster on January 2, 2006. Martin Toler Jr. wrote down before passing, "Tell all I see them on the other side."
7. Soldiers and Crickets - I close my eyes and try to imagine the pleasant evenings when Civil War soldiers rested in these Pocahontas County fields. When they too were absorbed and solaced by the peaceful hum of the crickets. What were the concerns in their heavy minds? What future was it that permeated and disturbed their thoughts? What restless fears in them tightened their chests and turned their guts? And did the crickets allay these bothers for them as well?
