On Wednesday, April 8, the Pocahontas County Commission had the honor of attending the dedication of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Erma Ora Byrd Science Center in Green Bank, in memory of Senator Robert C. Byrd’s late wife. Congressman Nick Rahall was also in attendance and introduced Senator Byrd to the honored guests.

The dedication ceremony took place in a packed Science Center Auditorium, and us commissioners enjoyed a front row seat. It was a memorable occasion to be sure, and you could hear a pin drop while the Senator spoke. It’s not every day one gets to hear from such a public servant who’s been at it for some 50 years, and I will not forget it.

After the dedication, the crowd assembled in the Science Center’s solarium to honor Pocahontas County resident Emma Beard for her generous donations to the Farmland Protection Board—and also to wish her a happy birthday. At 100, Emma is one of Pocahontas County’s most appreciated Democrats and citizens.

It was an honor to be at this inspirational and unforgettable event. I was proud to stand with my fellow commissioners Reta Griffith and Martin Saffer and be counted among those in attendance upon this fine day.
