CCAWV Training

I just returned from a 3-day county commissioner training course sponsored by the County Commissioners Association of West Virginia (CCAWV). It ran from January 28-30. I learned quite a bit and it was a good experience.

There are 167 county commissioners altogether in West Virginia, and most of them attended the training. Besides myself, there were just over 30 other newly elected commissioners.

The first day's training offered presentations on state building code, a lesson in parliamentary procedure, and working with the media.

The second day's training talked about the "do's and don'ts" of the hiring/firing process, veteran commissioners' first-year lessons learned, the state ethics code, county finance overview, and the newly implemented state-wide uniform budgeting process.

The third day's training discussed the Board of Equalization and Review (which the county commission does), the National Association of Counties, and the option of participating in a self-risk insurance pool for counties.

I met a lot of fellow commissioners, and was glad to represent Pocahontas County at this training event. The material presented and lessons learned will only help me as I find my feet in my service to Pocahontas County.
